Bill Alkema has over 25 years experience in the Engineering, Operations and Asset Management of electric power and process systems. Specific to his current duties as Desert Basin Plant Manager is his experience in the development, design review, operations and maintenance management of large and small power generation facilities for non-regulated power companies as well as regulated utilities. Bill has optimized existing facilities; refined existing O&M teams; and taken six O&M organizations from scratch through commissioning and successful start-ups. His facilities have included varied fuel technologies (gas, hydro, geothermal, waste wood and landfill) and remote operations, and have included a number of international projects. Recent developments in remote monitoring of the Desert Basin facility have been significant in improving the reliability of the prime movers and the balance of plant. Return to top
Moh Saleh
Engineering O&M Manager

Moh Saleh is an electrical engineer with a major in controls and power. He has been working in the power industry for 30 years. During his 21 years with a major OEM he was involved in the design, commissioning, and project management of power plant systems with emphasis on controls. Moh is the Engineering O&M manager at Desert Basin, a combined cycle plant with 2 Siemens 501FD2 and a GE D11 steam turbine. He has been extensively involved in the prototyping and adaptation of various monitoring programs for plant usage. Given the limited number of personnel in the plant these tools have helped greatly in the early detection of problems and troubleshooting , leading to a reduction in forced outage times. Brian Nessen has over 20 years experience in the media industry, specifically in the energy markets. He is currently Group Publishing Director for the TradeFair Group division of Access Intelligence. He also maintains the role of Publisher of POWER magazine. During the past nine years Brian has been involved in the development of numerous e-media initiatives that derive from or enhance traditional media. During the past 4 years he was involved with the acquisition and redevelopment of POWER magazine. Brian holds a BSBA from Tulsa University. Return to top

Bill Nieman is responsible for leading the team of Solution Architects in SmartSignal’s Sales group. As one of the earliest members of SmartSignal, he participated in development of the first applications of SmartSignal’s technology and has played important roles in product development, application development and sales, participating in projects in the Power, Oil and Gas and Aviation business of the company.
Prior to joining SmartSignal, Bill worked for AlliedSignal’s Research and Technology group, developing specialized measurement methods for its Aerospace, Automotive and Electronics Materials divisions. He was also trained as a Six-Sigma blackbelt in product development.
Bill holds a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University and MS and BS degrees in Geoscience from Washington State University and the University of Arizona. Return to top
